Dulles vs. DCA vs. BWI: Which DC-Area Airport Should You Fly From?

Dulles vs DCA vs BWI is the question every DMV traveler re-litigates roughly four times a year, usually at 11 p.m. with three browser tabs open and a fare comparison that refuses to make the decision obvious.

Here is the useful version. Not vibes, not vague talk about “convenience,” but actual drive times, actual 2026 parking rates, actual transit options, and a clear explanation of the one federal rule that quietly determines whether you can even fly nonstop where you want to go. By the end you will know which of the three fits your specific trip.

Quick Answer

Fly Dulles (IAD) if you live in Loudoun County or western Fairfax, if you are going international, or if you want the deepest nonstop network. It is 10 to 20 minutes from Sterling and Ashburn and is United’s East Coast hub.

Fly Reagan National (DCA) if you are headed downtown or to Arlington and your destination is a domestic city within about 1,250 miles. It sits five miles from downtown DC and is the fastest airport-to-city hop in the region.

Fly BWI Marshall if the fare is the deciding factor. It is a Southwest stronghold and by a wide margin the cheapest of the three to park at, which frequently offsets the longer drive.

Parking: The Numbers Nobody Puts in These Comparisons

This is where the three airports genuinely separate, and it is the section most comparisons skip entirely.

Dulles Airport (IAD) Limo Service Hero

Dulles (IAD). The Economy Lot runs a flat $15 per day and holds over 11,000 vehicles, with a free 24/7 shuttle from Curb 2F. Garages 1 and 2 sit at $21 per day. The Terminal Lot is $32. Across a seven-day trip, that is $105 versus $147 versus $224, so the Economy Lot shuttle ride buys you real money on anything longer than a weekend.

Reagan National (DCA). The most expensive of the three. The Economy Lot is $25 per day, Parking 2 caps at $29, and Parking 1 caps at $35. Both garages give you the first 60 minutes free, which is genuinely handy for a quick pickup. Worth knowing before you go: DCA has been building a new parking deck at the Economy Lot through 2026, so capacity there has been reduced at times. Pre-book if you are counting on it.

BWI Marshall. The value winner and it is not close. Long-Term Lots A and B run about $8 per day, the Daily Garage about $12, and the Hourly Garage caps around $22. On a week-long trip, BWI long-term parking costs less than three days in DCA’s Parking 1.

Off-airport hotel lots near all three go lower still, often $8 to $13 per day with a free shuttle, though most of those shuttles do not run 24 hours. If your flight leaves at 6 a.m., check the shuttle schedule before you commit, or skip the whole question with a flat-rate airport car service.

The Perimeter Rule: Why DCA Might Not Even Be an Option

Here is the thing that catches people out, and almost no local guide explains it properly.

Reagan National is the only commercial airport in the country still governed by a federal perimeter rule. It limits nonstop flights to destinations within 1,250 miles of Washington unless Congress has granted a specific exemption. Roughly 40 daily flights, meaning 20 round trips, currently operate under those exemptions, and the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 added five more round trips on top.

In practice, that means you can fly nonstop from DCA to a handful of beyond-perimeter cities including Austin, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Juan, Seattle and Portland. Everything else beyond 1,250 miles requires a connection.

The practical translation: if you are flying to the West Coast and you want a nonstop, check whether your specific route is exempt before you assume DCA works. Dulles carries no such restriction and, as a United hub, handles the region’s deepest long-haul and international network. This single rule is the reason so many Northern Virginia travelers end up at Dulles without quite knowing why.

Getting There Without a Car

An airport comparison that ignores transit in 2026 is missing half the picture.

Dulles. The Metro Silver Line has served Dulles directly since 2022. The Dulles International Airport Station sits just west of the Main Terminal with a covered walkway to ticketing, and the line runs through Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Loudoun Gateway and out to Ashburn, plus Tysons Corner and downtown DC in the other direction. It is a long ride from the city core, but for Loudoun and Reston residents it is a legitimate option.

Reagan National. The easiest transit airport in the region. Yellow and Blue line service, on-airport, roughly ten minutes from Crystal City. If you are staying downtown, this is hard to beat.

BWI. MARC and Amtrak both serve BWI Rail Station with a shuttle to the terminals. Coming from Union Station without a car, MARC removes the parking decision entirely.

Dulles (IAD): The Northern Virginia Default

Washington Dulles sits in Dulles, Virginia, minutes from Skyhawk Limousine’s Sterling base. For anyone in Loudoun County, Ashburn, Herndon, Reston or western Fairfax County, it is the closest major airport by a wide margin.

The upside is reach. As a United hub it carries the region’s deepest bench of nonstop international routes and has no perimeter restriction on domestic flying.

The tradeoff is scale. The Saarinen-designed Main Terminal is beautiful and the concourses are spread out, connected by the underground AeroTrain. Between the train ride, the walk and security, build in a real buffer. Plan to arrive two hours before a domestic departure and three before international, and add thirty minutes during Cherry Blossom season, peak summer and major holiday weeks.

Reagan National (DCA): Fastest to the District

DCA is five miles from downtown Washington, which makes it the clear winner when your meeting is in the city core. It is compact, easy to move through, and Metro drops you at the terminal.

The constraints are the perimeter rule above and the parking, which is the most expensive of the three. It is also the busiest of the three relative to its footprint, sitting on one short main runway with no room to expand.

For a domestic trip inside the perimeter with a downtown or Arlington destination, DCA usually wins on total door-to-gate time. A Reagan National car service is the fastest version of that trip, especially with luggage.

BWI Marshall: The Value Play

BWI sits north of the District near Baltimore, typically an hour or more from Sterling. What earns it a look is straightforward economics.

As a Southwest stronghold it frequently lists the lowest fares in the region, and its parking is dramatically cheaper than either Virginia airport. Save $180 on four tickets, park for $8 a day instead of $35, and the longer drive starts looking like a rounding error. For families and budget travelers, BWI car service with a fixed rate makes the math genuinely competitive.

Where BWI loses is on a tight schedule from Northern Virginia. Traffic on I-95 and the Beltway is not a variable you want in play before an early flight.

Flying Private?

None of the above applies. FBOs including Signature operate at all three, and private aviation transfers stage planeside so the car is waiting when you step off the aircraft.

How Much Does a Car Service Cost to Each?

Typical 2026 one-way flat rates in an executive sedan.

FromTo IADTo DCATo BWI
Sterling / Ashburn$75 to $95$135 to $175$185 to $240
Tysons / Reston$95 to $125$115 to $150$175 to $225
Downtown DC$110 to $155$85 to $110$140 to $190
Alexandria$120 to $160$85 to $115$150 to $200

Run the comparison against a week of parking before you dismiss it. Seven days in DCA’s Parking 1 is $245 before you have paid for a single mile of gas. Two flat-rate transfers frequently cost less than that, and nobody has to leave a car sitting in a lot. We broke the full economics down in car service vs Uber and Lyft in the DMV.

Choose in One Question

Where are you going, and what do you actually value?

  • International, long-haul, or based in Loudoun and western Fairfax: Dulles
  • Domestic within the perimeter and heading downtown or to Arlington: Reagan National
  • Fare and parking savings outweigh an extra 45 minutes of driving: BWI

If two of the three are close on price, the tiebreaker is almost always drive time on the morning of departure, not the fare.

Dulles vs. DCA vs. BWI: Which DC-Area Airport Should You Fly From

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airport is closest to Sterling, VA?
Dulles (IAD) is closest at roughly 10 to 20 minutes, followed by Reagan National at 30 to 45 minutes and BWI at 60 to 75 minutes.

Which DC airport is cheapest to fly from?
BWI Marshall most often posts the lowest fares thanks to its strong Southwest presence, and it also has the cheapest parking of the three at around $8 per day in Long-Term Lots A and B. Savings can be partly offset by the longer drive from Northern Virginia.

Which airport is best for international flights?
Dulles. As a United hub with no perimeter restriction, it carries the region’s deepest nonstop international network.

What is the DCA perimeter rule?
A federal rule limiting nonstop flights at Reagan National to destinations within 1,250 miles of Washington, unless Congress grants an exemption. About 40 daily flights operate under exemptions, with five additional round trips authorized by the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024.

Can I take Metro to Dulles Airport?
Yes. The Silver Line has served Dulles since 2022, with a station just west of the Main Terminal connected by a covered walkway, running through Tysons, Reston, Herndon, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn.

How much is parking at Dulles Airport?
The Economy Lot is a flat $15 per day, Garages 1 and 2 are $21 per day, and the Terminal Lot is $32 per day.

How much is parking at Reagan National?
The Economy Lot is $25 per day, Parking 2 caps at $29, and Parking 1 caps at $35. Both garages include the first 60 minutes free.

How early should I arrive at each airport?
Two hours for domestic and three for international at Dulles and BWI, given terminal size and shuttle time. Ninety minutes to two hours is usually sufficient at DCA because of its compact layout. Add thirty minutes during Cherry Blossom season, summer peak and holiday weeks.

Is it worth booking a car service instead of driving and parking?
For trips of three days or more, frequently yes. A week in DCA’s Parking 1 runs $245, and two flat-rate transfers often cost less while removing parking, shuttles and the walk back to your car at midnight.

Can one car service cover all three airports?
Yes. Skyhawk Limousine runs flat-rate transfers to and from IAD, DCA and BWI with 24/7 dispatch, live flight tracking, and in-terminal meet and greet or curbside departure service.

Do you serve travelers outside Northern Virginia?
Yes, across Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia and all 171 DMV locations, plus 44 airports nationwide.

The Bottom Line

Dulles vs DCA vs BWI is less about which airport is best and more about which one matches the trip in front of you. International or Loudoun-based, take Dulles. Downtown-bound on a domestic route inside the perimeter, take Reagan. Chasing a fare with time to spare, take BWI.

Whichever you pick, the part that reliably goes wrong is not the flight. It is the 5 a.m. scramble, the parking shuttle that does not run that early, and the rideshare that never accepts. A flat rate booked the night before removes all three. See us on Instagram & TikTok.
